Homes built before the 1980’s across the world often have popcorn ceiling which is in desperate need of repair.  The most common decision is to remove these ceiling’s specifically if they are in the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. However, but more and more homeowners that are remodelling or decorating their homes are looking into repairing popcorn ceiling options.  This is not a surprising decision as the actual removal of an asbestos based ceiling is not only messy but sometimes dangerous as well. Further to this it can be a significantly expensive exercise - and who isn't looking to save a few bucks in today's economic climate?

In the case of removing the ceiling, the drywall finishing beneath the texture will have to be re-textured and painted.  On the other hand patching the ceiling is far less expensive than removing the old texture.  Some other comparisons you could draw are that many homeowners are opting for cabinet refacing when remodelling their kitchen rather than buying all new cabinets and staining concrete floors instead of buying new flooring. What we are talking about hear is a very similar comparison.

Believe it or not, fixing cracks in the ceiling that are small or medium is by far, one of the simplest home repairs there is.  Far too often, homeowners believe a professional will have to be called in to make these repairs, but homeowners with a basic skill set can complete the job with no problem at all.  Some tools you will need is a putty knife and some filler. The worst thing homeowners can do is to ignore the cracks, which can end up leading to a bigger problem.  This article provides some tips that will make repairing popcorn ceiling cracks fast and easy.

The first step is to gather all the materials and tools that will be needed for the repair.  There are many different products available that will work fine, but it can be difficult to make a decision because of the many options.  There is a way to simplify this process.  Most home improvement stores sell ready-made kits for fixing the cracks.  These kits contain everything that's needed to remove, replace, or patch damaged ceiling areas.

While it is pretty easy to repair cracks that are small to medium in size, there are a variety of wall texture techniques that can be used to complete the job.  Because some techniques are easier than others, it's a good idea to do a little research to find the technique that will work best for you and your circumstances.  Fortunately, there is plenty of information available online that will describe the various techniques.  There are also a variety of videos online that can be used.  These are very helpful because it's often easier to learn something new if it can be seen rather than read. Below is one of the most helpful videos on repairing these kinds of ceilings.

You'll be ready to start repairing popcorn ceiling cracks once you've decided how you're going to approach the job and gathered the materials you'll need.  The first step will be to remove the old popcorn from the area that will be repaired.  Once you've scraped the area and cleared the debris, use a filling compound to fill the crack.  Be sure you smooth the area as you're applying the compound.  Once the filling compound has thoroughly dried, you'll be ready to replace the popcorn texture with the help of a spray foam product.  Believe it or not, that’s' all there is to it!

At the end of the day you may still choose to get a popcorn ceiling quote from a contractor – and to be honest if money is not an issue this would be worth investing – but if you are anything like me and love DIY then I would encourage you to do it yourself. Good luck!

Kitchen remodeling sounds like a whole lot of fun until you start talking about cracks and repairing the ceiling. My husband talked about a whole huge mess, but it sounds like we can just fix it and then put those little bubbles right back up there so that it looks regular.

Fixing ceilings sounds like a lot of work until you read this. I thought about just repairing the popcorn in a way by making it smooth and refacing it, but I think that this makes a little bit more sense. It would be better to have the whole thing be uniform instead of one part painted.

I always wondered why it looked like bubbly concrete on the ceiling, but now it makes a lot of sense. At least these cracks above the kitchen cabinet are just superficial. Thanks for the tips on how to do this myself. It will save me a ton of money this month!

Wow, this sounds so complicated! I'll have to show this info to my husband, but I bet that we end up getting some kind of drywall services to do this. I am not much help after all, so he ends up doing all of this kind of stuff on his own.

My wife decided that the kitchen needed decorating again, and as we were tearing things out, I noticed some ceiling cracks that needed repairing. It is a major relief to see that they are probably cosmetic and something that I can take care of on my own without a professional.

When we started remodeling the bathroom, we thought that it would just be a very simple job that involved replacing all the fixtures and flooring, but then we noticed a couple of cracks in the popcorn ceiling. I was afraid it would be too complicated to do ourselves, but I am glad it's so easy.

Thanks for such a helpful article. I'm doing a little home remodeling and I want to do everything right. The last thing I need is to have to call in a professional to 'repair' my work.
